Second Place: “the stone artist” by Theresa Rogers on the Stanley Park seawall in the Vancouver Poet Laureate City Poems Contest, Emerging Poets category, June 2022
Comments on the poem from the judge, David Ly:
It takes a refined point-of-view to showcase a single location in a poem that simultaneously pushes the narrative forward, and Theresa Rogers does this beautifully with “the stone artist”. Like how the artist in the poem carefully stacks his stones along Vancouver’s seawall, Theresa Rogers has meticulously built this poem up with few, but beautifully arranged words. “the stone artist” displays a wonderful balance between nuanced description and honed poetic voice. -DL
Residency
My review of the workshop:
"Marge Piercy is seemingly at the top of her game — she provides the most honest, insightful, wise and ultimately transformative comments on a poem that I have ever received or heard (and I have participated in many workshops with top poets). She has the power to listen to and return your voice back to you if you have somehow lost or doubted it along the way. Having hit a stubborn block in my writing, I applied with some trepidation to this workshop and I am so grateful that I managed to get in during what turned out to be only a brief hiatus in the pandemic and, happily, in my own writing. Thank you, Marge and workshop mates, for a week of poetic joy, generosity, and renewal in ever beautiful Wellfleet."
